Houston’s Leading Provider of Residential Treatment for Men

Residential Treatment is a long-term approach to successful recovery. Many alcoholic and addicts choose the short-term approach of a 28-day Inpatient Treatment Program and find that they are not ready to face the harsh reality of the real world upon discharge. The solution is Extended Aftercare, Inc. Our 90-day Treatment Program allows men to receive all the counseling and treatment they would receive in the best inpatient facility while also providing opportunities to “test the waters” of the real world. Our flexible clinical programming schedule and open campus policy allow men to pursue work, school or volunteer activities while in treatment so they will be ready to rejoin society upon discharge. And our Alumni Association provides men with the post-treatment support and connections that are so crucial to a successful, life-long recovery.
Nationally Recognized, Multi-credentialed Treatment Team
Extended Aftercare, Inc. employs only the best and brightest in the Chemical Dependency field. Our CEO and Chief Clinical Officer, Keith Liles, has been honored with dozens of awards, most notably, the highest accolade afforded a member of the addiction profession, the Mel Shulstad National Addiction Professional of the Year Award in 2005.
The credentials of our staff include: Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC), Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ADC) Level III Diplomate, Internationally Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ICADC), Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Certified Anger Resolution Therapist (CART), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), and Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.).
24-Hour Supervision and Structure
While Extended Aftercare, Inc. strives to make our clientele feel as if they are living at home (as opposed to a hospital or dormitory), we know that men new to recovery need constant support and supervision. Each of our residential houses is supervised and operated by a live-in staff member.
Providing a healthy and structured treatment experience while at Extended Aftercare, Inc. is one of our keys to success. The rules and requirements that clients follow are in place to help them learn new and healthy habits to take with them when they graduate the 90-day program. Sometimes these habits are as simple as making a bed in the morning or completing a simple house chore in the evening but everything clients are required to do is intended to foster the growth of characteristics such as accountability, integrity, honesty, open-mindedness, and teamwork.
Individual, Group and Family Counseling
Upon admission, all clients are assigned to a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor who meets one-on-one with the client on a weekly basis. The counselor also creates an individualized treatment plan that is specifically tailored to fit the client’s wants and needs for his recovery. Clients are also encouraged to visit their counselor at any time they are so inclined to build trust and connection. The goal of individual counseling is to provide an open, supportive, and confidential environment for the client to address the issues that are concerning him while the counselor can offer guidance, support and clinical observations.
During a client’s stay at Extended Aftercare, he is required to attend multiple clinical groups on a weekly basis. We offer sessions such as Process Groups, Education Groups, Upon Awakening Groups, Community Group, Spirituality Group, and Alumni Group. In addition, clients are required to attend at least one 12-step meeting per day, many of which take place on the Extended Aftercare Campus including Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Group counseling provides a safe environment in which a man can experiment with new, healthy behaviors, improve communication skills, and receive feedback from his peers with similar concerns and interests, all while being facilitated by a professional clinician.
Family counseling is offered and encouraged at Extended Aftercare, Inc. because the interpersonal relationships between family members is so important to a successful recovery. Once a month, family members are invited to “Family Day” on our campus, facilitated by our Family Therapist Debbie Drake. In addition, clients are asked to invite their significant others and families to participate in individual family or couples sessions. These private sessions provide the client with a safe environment to work through some of the more personal issues within his family unit. These family oriented approaches promote better relationships and understanding within a family. After all, addiction effects everyone around an individual, not just the addict.
Integrating Treatment with Reality
Extended Aftercare, Inc. we do our very best to allow men to experience reality while having a safe place receive the help they need. It does no good to the client to be secluded in the world of recovery for 90 days only to be shoved back into reality upon discharge. Successful recovery requires men to learn how to deal with people, places, and things that trigger them while in a safe supportive environment so when they do complete the program they have all the tools and the experience necessary to take on the world sober.
Nearly all of our groups are held on a variety of days and times to better facilitate men with work or school schedules which may conflict with one group or another. Our open campus policy allows for men to leave the campus for any reason (after a two week probationary period) so they can experience normal activities such as going to a movie or attending an outside meeting.
Mental Health and Medication Supervision
Extended Aftercare, Inc. offers medical and mental health support in addition to our primary chemical dependency counseling services. Mental illnesses can increase the risk for alcoholism and/or drug abuse, sometimes because of self-medication. On the other hand, alcoholism and addiction can lead to significant anxiety and depression. Basically, alcoholism and drug addictions and other psychiatric disorders often occur at the same time. They are distinct disorders that must be treated as such in order to achieve a good outcome for the client. Dr. Douglas Stockwell is available to meet with clients who have concerns about their mental health or who have medication issues. His expertise allows Extended Aftercare, Inc. to better serve our clients for all their needs.
Individuals who suffer from alcoholism and/or addiction often have one or more accompanying medical issues, such as lung and cardiovascular issues, stroke, or cancer. Our Certified Addictions Registered Nurse, Julie DeNofa, provides her expertise to Extended Aftercare clients and ensures that they are cleared as medically stable upon entering our program.
One of the Nation’s Most Active Alumni Associations
The Extended Aftercare Alumni Association, Inc. (EAAAI) is the counterpart to EAI’s clinical treatment. While men who come to Extended Aftercare are in need of comprehensive clinical support, the Extended Aftercare Alumni Association provides the team-building, sober fun and examples of what it is like to live a sober lifestyle in the real world. EAAAI is a non-profit organization that functions autonomously and provides support to EAI clients, alumni, friends and families through sober events, trips, meetings and service projects.
The EAAAI Board of Directors organizes and holds an average of 150 events a year to ensure that those who are new to recovery gain an understanding of how to have fun and stay sober. Some examples of events organized by EAAAI are: volleyball tournaments, softball tournaments, card and board game events, camp-outs, barbeques, holiday celebrations, banquets, Alcathons, bowling nights, and movie nights.
The EAI Alumni Housing Program is available for clients graduating from the 90-day Treatment Program. The 26 bed facility offers men fully furnished living arrangements, all utilities paid and continued ease of access to their counselor in a sober living environment at a low monthly rate.
