Houston Run for Recovery

March 2011

Last year, EAI was honored to serve as a premiere sponsor of the Houston Run for Recovery, which in its first year became the largest sober event celebrating National Recovery Month in the City of Houston. Plans for the second annual event are already underway and EAI is again playing a lead role as sponsor and coordinator, with CEO Keith Liles serving as the event Co-Chairman with Kay Austin, CEO of Santa Maria Hostel, Inc. Expecting that participation will increase dramatically both in participants as well as with the pre and post-race activities, the Planning Committee, which also includes EAI staff members Terry Smith and Anthony Davis, is already meeting to coordinate efforts. Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 11 and plan to be at Sam Houston Park in Downtown Houston for an amazing day of recovery.EAI_2011R4R_savethedate

“We are always looking for opportunities to be involved in Houston’s Recovery Community and Run for Recovery offers an amazing way to connect with our brothers and sisters in recovery but also to carry the message of hope to those still suffering,” declares Keith Liles.

August 2010

In honor of “National Addiction and Drug Abuse Recovery Month,” Santa Maria Hostel, Extended Aftercare, Inc., and The Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston on Sunday, September 12 are presenting “Houston’s Inaugural Run for Recovery and Citywide Sobriety Celebration.”

EAI_R4R_cookoff-teamThe 5k (3.1 miles) run and walk start at 7:30 a.m. at Sam Houston Park and follow Allen Parkway to Waugh Drive and back up Allen Parkway to Sam Houston Park in downtown Houston. The race is followed by the “Extended Aftercare After-Race After-Party,” an outdoor festival in Sam Houston Park featuring live music, an awards ceremony, volleyball, children’s activities, and the “Sizzlin’ South of the Border Cook-Off Competition” with participating local treatment organizations and individuals competing for prizes.

Special guest speaker Matt Russell, former pastor of Mercy Street at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, will share his recovery story of hope and humility. Matt started Mercy Street in 1997 and currently lives in Lubbock with his family while pursuing his Ph.D.

Kay Austin, CEO of Santa Maria Hostel, who first came up with the idea for the event, said, “I wanted Houston’s recovery community to play a role in National Recovery Month and I hope this inaugural run becomes an annual reminder of the value of recovery for those struggling with substance abuse.”

“As the fourth largest city in the United States, and one known as having one of the strongest recovery networks in the nation, it is only befitting that Houston would boast an event of this magnitude to celebrate sobriety, all the while raising awareness of the diseases of alcoholism and drug abuse,” states Extended Aftercare CEO Keith Liles.

June 2010

As an integral part of the treatment and recovery community in Southeast Texas, Extended Aftercare continues to look for new opportunities to celebrate National Alcohol and Drug Abuse Recovery Month.

Recovery Month provides a platform to celebrate both people in recovery and those who serve them. Each September, thousands of treatment programs around the country celebrate their successes and share them with their neighbors, friends, and colleagues in an effort to educate the public about treatment, how it works, for whom, and why. Substance abuse treatment providers have made significant accomplishments, having transformed the lives of untold thousands of Americans. These victories often go unnoticed by the broader population; therefore, Recovery Month provides a vehicle to celebrate these successes.

This year, Extended Aftercare has joined forces with Santa Maria Hostel and The Council on Alcohol and Drugs Houston to create a recovery event that will encompass all of Houston. While the details are still being finalized, we are excited to be a part of Houston’s Inaugural Run for Recovery which will include a 5K run, a 5K walk, and a 1K run for kids, followed by the Extended Aftercare After Race After Party: a slew of events including speakers, kid’s events, a cook-off, and sporting tournaments.

“We are planning to create one of the largest celebrations of recovery in the country. A special day when everyone from recovering addicts, to treatment providers, to families touched by addiction can come and experience the fun of recovery while raising awareness around this deadly disease,” notes CEO and Chief Clinical Officer Keith Liles.
